What is the Mental Health Coalition?
The Mental Health Coalition consists of advocates, professionals, providers, consumers, law enforcement officers, and governmental agency representatives who are concerned about the treatment of individuals suffering from mental illness and substance abuse.
Representing 32 groups in the Pinellas/Pasco area, the Coalition is committed to improving the lives of those who are mentally ill and/or have substance abuse issues by working for positive changes that will impact our local communities.
The Coalition's primary goal is to demonstrate the need for cost effective, quality services that not only benefit the quality of life for all affected by these illnesses, but also benefit the goals of our communities.
Collaboration
The Key to Successful Planning
With an influx of people to our area with more intensive needs, there are not enough existing programs in the community to support the basic human needs of these individuals, let alone their specialized needs due to their mental illness and/or substance abuse issues.
It is important for the key program providers, funders, agencies, government entities and advocacy groups to work together to:
access funding
plan for the future
create effective programs
build a continuum of services
work cooperatively to offer services

Coalition members have continuing input to planning an integrated substance abuse and mental health continuum of services for both Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Everyone's goal is to reflect not only the needs and program priorities established by the State of Florida, but also to incorporate the needs of the district as well as individual needs of persons with severe mental illness and substance abuse problems and their families. As an example, Coalition members play a significant role with the collaborative group which designed and coordinates Crisis Intervention Training (C.I.T.) for law enforcement officers.
