Admission Guidelines

In some cases, the need for hospitalization is clear. For example, if a friend or family member:

  • Has had a recent suicide attempt
  • Constantly thinks or talks about suicide
  • Is no longer taking care of himself or herself
  • Can't stop drinking or using drugs

These signs are indications that inpatient care would be beneficial or necessary.

In other cases, the decision may not be as apparent.

For some people, coping with life's stressors is simply too difficult. Thoughts of feeling overwhelmed or thinking "I can't go on" can be symptoms of more significant problems.

In either situation, a face-to-face assessment is the best way to determine the most appropriate course of action.

As a service to the community, Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center offers a free and confidential assessment, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call 757-627-LIFE.
