Services

Medical Rehabilitation

The Medical Rehabilitation program specializes in rehabilitation management of neurological diagnoses and debilitation related to general medical disorders. Specific areas of expertise are listed below. The physician-directed medical team is supported by full-time nursing staff and therapists from physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy, and case management. Family involvement, support, and education are important aspects of treatment, as are psychological counseling and behavior therapies when appropriate. Our 31-bed Bluebonnet Unit offers private rooms in a suite arrangement with a shared bath.

Brain Injury & Neurological Disorders

Step-down levels of care for adolescents and adults include acute, subacute, and postacute care. Typical diagnoses or conditions include but are not limited to traumatic (Los Rancho Levels II-VII) or organic brain injury, coma/vegetative state, stroke, anoxia, ventilator dependent, metabolic disorders, spasticity and hypertonicity, pulmonary complications, severe physical disabilities, dysphagia, seizure disorders, autonomic instability, and neurobehavioral complications.

Brain Injury in Children

While the child with brain injury might have recovered medically, behavioral issues may still exist. Our programs are therapeutically designed for children ages 8-17 having difficulty functioning in all areas, including social, family, school and self-care. Our fully accredited, on-campus private school provides individualized education programs, GED preparation, and vocational skills training.

Coma - Minimally Conscious

Patients in a coma or emerging from a coma are carefully monitored to determine change. Our staff is skilled in monitoring inconsistent behaviors for evidence of awareness. When clinically indicated, pharmacological interventions may be used to increase arousal or enhance performance.

Stroke

Individuals of any age who have had a stroke receive comprehensive services designed to help them regain optimum function. Areas include pulmonary, cardiac and orthopedic reconditioning; intensive balance/vestibular disorder therapies to improve gait and lessen the risk of future falls; and speech and swallowing therapies and techniques to improve communication and encourage self-feeding.

Pulmonary Complications

Our medical rehabilitation program includes an excellent pulmonary program for quick and successful weaning from ventilators and removal of tracheostomy tubes. By withdrawing this dependency, patients are able to participate more actively in their rehabilitation and achieve greater stability. Families of patients who remain on ventilators and/or require tracheostomy tubes receive training to assist their loved one when discharged home.

Neurobehavioral Program

Our program is structured to meet the needs of individuals who have had a traumatic brain injury or similar neurological impairment. Emphasis is placed on social/leisure skills development, compensatory strategies for memory and impaired cognition, educational and vocational preparation, daily living activities, and management of home and personal environments. Living units include flexible and secure co-ed units for adults, and separate co-ed units for adolescents.

Neuropsychiatric Program

Our program provides a secure, therapeutically planned treatment and learning environment for behaviorally challenged children and adolescents. This program specializes in rehabilitation of neuropsychatric, psychiatric, developmentally delayed and/or brain injured, as well as medically involved individuals.

Residential Treatment Center - RTC

Adolescents who have developmental and/or behavioral issues learn adaptive skills, compensatory skills, self-control and self-care in one of several secure therapeutically planned group living and learning environments designed for their specialized needs. While specific treatment goals are unique for each individual, the overall goal is to maximize each patient's behavioral, cognitive, physical, psychosocial, psychological, and psychoeducational functioning. Separate male and female units house up to a total of 30 adolescents.

Educational Services

Our on-campus educational program is an integral part of each person's individualized treatment process. Our classes are designed for individualized instruction and are taught by special education teachers. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and approved by the Texas Education Agency to serve ages 3-21.

Vocational Services

Within our programs, patients learn and practice skills that will help them function within a community setting. Depending on their abilities, patients learn skills needed to live in monitored or independent living settings, including how to access community services. A critical part of developing independence is learning work-related skills and habits. Our hallmark is the expansive vocational and prevocational training that is integrated into the patient's daily routine. Skills learned include cooperative work habits, staying on task, tolerating stimulation and career development. We offer several specific training occupations. Once they develop basic skills, patients may practice them in a less structured group setting on and off campus while potentially earning money.

Chemical Dependency

Our Brain Injury/Addictive Disorders (BI/ADTM) track is a specialized chemical dependency program that is based on a modified version of the 12-step approach to accommodate unique needs of individuals with neurological impairments. Licensed chemical dependency counselors provide treatment that incorporates workbooks, activities and exercises designed to match the cognitive level of the patients in the program. Relapse prevention plans are a part of treatment, with patients learning to utilize traditional AA or NA groups.

Therapeutic Recreation

Annual events include a Valentine's dance, Easter egg hunt, Fourth of July festival, Halloween carnival and Olympic day. Additional activities, such as community trips to sports events, zoos and amusement parks are offered through out the year as appropriate.
