New Horizons Program

New Horizons at the Midlands Campus provides general psychiatric and behavioral treatment services for female adolescents ages 11-17.5 with an Axis I or an Axis II psychiatric disorder. We deliver services in a residential setting with awake supervision 24 hours a day.

The approach to assessment and treatment of adolescents is an individualized psychosocial and developmental perspective. Our goal is to move the adolescent toward significant improvement in order to allow placement or a return to a less restrictive environment when discharged.

New Horizons is for females ages 11-17.5:

  • With evidence of a DSM-IV diagnosable mental disorder.
    Primary issues may include:
    • Depression
    • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
    • Self Injurious and Suicidal Ideations
    • Conduct Disorders
    • Sexual abuse/victimization
    • Personality disorders
    • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
    • Bipolar Dosorder
    • Anxiety Disorder

  • Who are experiencing dysfunction within the community, family, or school setting as evidenced by:
    • Risk of removal from the home
    • School suspensions or expulsions
    • Disruptive or destructive behaviors
    • Aggressive behaviors
    • Disregard for family rules or the law and repeated illegal acts
    • Behavior that is unpredicatble and unmanageble in a less restrictive setting

Education

Students attend a six-hour day of school, which includes seven 50-minute periods:

  • English/Language Arts
  • Science
  • Math
  • Social Studies
  • Health/Physical Education
  • Social Skills
  • Computer Science

We align our teaching material with South Carolina's state standards. Teachers have bachelor's or master's degrees and are licensed in the state.

During the summer months, we hold a seven to eight week enrichment program that allows students to participate in art, music, drama, cooking and sewing.
