Teaching Couples to be Friends:
A Counseling Intervention
Presenter:
Floyd F. Robison, Ph.D.
Dr. Robison is an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology at Indiana University. He teaches courses and conducts research on group, family and couples counseling techniques. He directs the counseling field experience program on the IUPUI campus and has authored more than 50 professional conference papers and publications. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Robison is a practicing psychologist and consultant to many agencies in Indiana.

Objectives:
At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to help couples successfully work through current and future conflicts by accomplishing the following:
- Couples will understand how they have come to construe each other as enemies.
- They will decide how they may reinterpret their view of each other as friends who have yet to understand what they need from each other and how to give and receive what they need.
- They will identify ways of talking and behaving with each other that are consistent with the ways friends would talk and behave to negotiate solutions to their conflicts.
