Field Placement

Fort Lauderdale Hospital provides a field placement for interns to gain professional experience in the practice of social work, mental health counseling, and marriage and family therapy. The facility provides opportunities for the student to observe and participate in a variety of clinical experiences. The practicum format conforms with the minimum standards set forth by local regulatory and national licensing agencies of the profession to maximize the student's chances of becoming duly licensed upon satisfactory completion of their full course of study.

Fort Lauderdale Hospital is an excellent practicum site as it provides a variety of clients and presenting problems. Clients include patient, parents, children, couples and families. Clients represent a range of gender, age, class, religious, ethnic, and racial groups. Presenting problems range from ordinary life difficulties to serious crises with life-threatening implications.

Interns are provided with appropriate meeting spaces in which to conduct their sessions/meetings. Meeting spaces are comfortable and private to ensure maintenance of confidentiality. Interns are provided with a full orientation to the facility. This includes review of safety and emergency plans. In addition, all interns receive a comprehensive orientation to the hospital. Throughout the course of their placement, interns receive a minimum of one hour of face-to-face individual or group supervision each week. Interns clocking more than 15 hours of client meeting per week are given an additional hour of supervision. Supervision is clearly distinguishable from psychotherapy and from training activities. The supervision process focuses on direct observation of the intern's clinical work, review of written notes and/or description of client cases. Supervision is provided by a qualified supervisor who meets the requirements in Board Rule(s) 11.007, 21.007 or 31.007 for the State of Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. The identified supervisor provides a formal written evaluation of the intern during each semester. The interns also engage in the evaluation process of the placement and supervisor once each semester so as to ensure maintenance of a quality experience.
