New Choices

Cedar Springs The New Choices substance abuse treatment program at Cedar Springs specializes in improving the quality of life for those who are struggling due to their use of any mood-altering chemicals, including alcohol, "street" drugs or prescription drugs.

In addition, we offer stabilization and specialized services for adults with co-occurring mental health issues such as bi-polar disorder, depression, and a range of anxiety disorders, including PTSD and other trauma related issues. The disease model of addiction, cognitive behavioral therapy, and 12 Step support services act as the foundation of our program.

Medical Detoxification

Treatment includes:

  • Medical monitoring (including medication management) of withdrawal symptoms
  • Qualified psychiatrists, registered nurses, LPNs, and mental health technicians to assist in the withdrawal process
  • An emphasis on the importance of adequate rest and good nutrition as the first steps toward lifestyle change

Inpatient Substance Abuse Treatment

Our inpatient substance abuse treatment program provides an intensive therapeutic environment in which patients can take the first steps toward lasting change. Individual, group, and family sessions are coupled with psychoeducational programming and the 12 Step model of recovery. Licensed therapists with specialization in addictions, trauma, and mental health work with skilled nurses who provide treatment under the direction of qualified psychiatrists.

Criteria for Admission:

  • Must meet DSM-IV criteria for psychoactive substance dependence
  • Medically detoxified and stable
  • Emotional status such that the person is able to function in their usual environment
  • Living environment supportive to change
  • Must sign an abstinence contract
  • Submit to random drug screens

Inpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment

The New Choices dual diagnosis chemical dependency program specializes in the treatment of complex forms of traumatic response resulting from childhood and adult trauma as it contributes to substance abuse and dependence. Using a combination of therapies based on trauma research and interventions endorsed by the armed forces, treatment also includes education of the disease concept of chemical dependency, cognitive behavioral skill building and therapy, anger and domestic violence management, marital and family counseling, and leisure/life skills. Relapse prevention and support group participation round out the program. Our program is designed for an average length of stay ranging from 21-28 days, but the length of stay is tailored to the individual.
