Mental Health & Psychiatric Services
Adult Psychiatric Problems: For adults, psychiatric, emotional and substance
abuse problems can affect careers, marriages and relationships. Atlantic
Shores Hospital offers a confidential, caring environment that promotes
crisis resolution, positive self-awareness, social skills, and personal
growth.
Problems we address:
- Suicidal feelings/thoughts
- Extreme anger and/or dangerous behavior
- Anxiety/panic attacks
- Schizophrenia
- Depression
- Hallucinations/delusional thinking
- Phobias
- Manic depressive disorder
- Physical/sexual abuse
- Co-dependency
Our Program Continuum:
Psychiatric treatment is offered to adults at the following
levels:
- Acute inpatient hospitalization
- Intensive outpatient hospitalization
- Individual outpatient by referral
The acute program treats adults in an intensive therapeutic structure,
providing medical and psychiatric stabilization and 24-hour nursing care
for patients experiencing critical symptoms. Intensive outpatient treatment
provides 3 hours of structured therapy per day, allowing the patient
to maintain a work schedule and live at home.
For patients whose treatment needs can best be met through individual
outpatient therapy, Atlantic Shores works closely with a statewide network
of mental health professionals to arrange appropriate referrals.
Treatment Components:
Treatment for each adult is administered by a multidisciplinary team of
mental health professionals led by a psychiatrist.
Team members may include:
Psychologists, social workers, activity therapists, substance abuse
counselor, nurses, case managers, program specialist
The treatment process begins with a comprehensive evaluation to help
diagnose any underlying medical or biochemical origins of disease. An
individual plan of care is written to meet the special needs of each patient.
Therapeutic components may include:
Individual therapy, Group therapy, Family therapy/education/support, 12-step
support groups, Discharge planning, Activity therapy, Medical education/management,
Psycho-educational groups
The treatment plan focuses on attainable short and long-term goals established
with input from the patient's family and referring professional, if appropriate.
Active family involvement in treatment is a critical component as the
patient's recovery is often correlated to healthy family interaction.
Because psychiatric problems may be complicated by a coexisting substance
abuse problem, Atlantic Shores provides specialized treatment for adults
with dual diagnosis issues. Emphasis is placed on teaching relapse prevention
skills in both the Adult Psychiatric and Dual Diagnosis Programs.
