The Pines Residential Treatment Center
The Young Men's Center

Youth placed in the Young Men's Center are referred by family, social services departments, court services or education agencies because they have demonstrated a need for a structured therapeutic environment with 24-hour supervision. Through their inability to be maintained safely in a less restrictive environment, these resident will participate in a program designed to treat emotional, psychiatric and behavioral problems concurrently. The Young Men's Center is located at the Crawford campus, in Portsmouth, Virginia.

The program's clinical treatment components are designed to appropriately confront socially inappropriate, aggressive, impulsive and self-destructive acts through a cognitive behavioral approach. Utilizing milieu and professional clinical services, with an emphasis on providing a culturally-appropriate component, the young men learn new and improved internal self-control, interpersonal and management of their illnesses. Adaptive skills in different areas are taught until the young men are able to demonstrate competency. All residents receive individual, family and group therapies. In addition, residents participate in recreational activities, social skills training, substance abuse services and art therapy. Education is an important component of the program. An on-grounds school provides a variety of academic challenges and support to help students achieve and learn. Vocational training is also provided to help residents develop the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce.
