The Pines Residential Treatment Center The Visions Program is a gender-specific program that provides therapeutic services to hard-to-treat and difficult to place young women ages 12 to 17. The levels of disconnectedness, distrust, and aggression exhibited by these girls often result in failed placements, school suspensions, unhealthy relationships, and criminal charges. Such behavioral outcomes, couples with psychiatric diagnoses render these young women a treatment challenge. Visions addresses issues uniquely experienced by girls, including self-esteem, body image, parenting, powerlessness, domestic violence, rape and other trauma. The program teaches residents to recognize and replace problem-causing and self-destructive behaviors with socially appropriate skills sets. Behavioral and relational/cultural therapies provide the psychological underpinnings for the program. Life and vocational skills are incorporated throughout the program. Located at The Pines Crawford Campus, Visions offers a 14-bed unit designed to be warm and inviting to female residents. A small staff to resident ratio of 1:4 creates an environment in which nurturing and supportive relationships are fostered. Upon admission to the unit, new residents are assigned a peer “big sister” to support her transition into the milieu and answer any questions she may have. The Visions Program, by design, offers a shorter length of stay than other female programs at The Pines. Although, the rate of progression through the program is solely dependent upon each resident’s commitment to treatment. In order to assist these young women in successfully integrating back into their communities, a Community Reintegration group is offered that allows residents to rehearse their relapse prevention plan during a supervised therapeutic leave of absence. This group provides the residents with an opportunity to evaluate and revise their prevention plan as needed and encourages them to establish and communicate with their community support system while still in a safe environment.
