The Pines Residential Treatment Center The Substance Abuse Treatment Services Department
provides a continuum of services for The Pines Residential Treatment Center. The
service continuum is designed to address co-morbid substance abuse or chemical
dependency problems in residents being treated for psychiatric/behavioral
problems. Adolescents struggling with psychiatric illness are vulnerable to
developing substance abuse/dependence disorders.
The bio-psychosocial model of addiction forms the philosophical
umbrella.
The cornerstone of substance
abuse treatment philosophy for The Pines is based on the Adolescent
Developmental Model of Recovery. Adolescents have developmentally specific needs
in their substance abuse treatment and relapse prevention planning. When
adolescents with psychiatric impairments who abuse or are dependent on alcohol
or other drugs relapse into chemical use, their ability to maintain treatment
gains is severely diminished.
Services Description The Clinical Director of the Substance Abuse Services
Department works collaboratively with the Clinical Directors and Administrators
of each campus/program to assess the needs of their residents and to develop and
operationalize substance abuse treatment for the target population. The needs of
the referring agencies and communities are also vital components in designing
the individualized substance abuse treatment program for each resident. Each resident is provided substance abuse education
and a licensed and/or certified counselor individually evaluates his or her
history of any chemical use/abuse/dependence. In conjunction with the
resident’s treatment team, recommendation is made for the appropriate level
and intensity of treatment intervention. This may range from a weekly group to a
full dual diagnosis treatment regime and milieu. Specialty groups are also
offered to meet the needs of the residents. Child of Alcoholic/Addict (COA)
groups are offered on each program/campus. Not On Tobacco (NOT) Smoking
Cessation groups that are gender-specific are offered to teens in not returning
to smoking when they leave treatment. Formalized training is offered by the department to
staff of The Pines and First Home Care on a regular, ongoing basis. Clinical
training and case consultation is also offered. The substance abuse counselors
are an integral part of the eact treatment team.
Program Goal The goal of the Substance Abuse Treatment Services
Department is to ensure that each resident receives the level of substance abuse
treatment services he or she needs in order to ensure his/her best chance of
success in the treatment of their psychiatric and substance abuse disorder. The
goal for residents with a history of drug and/or alcohol abuse or dependence is
to develop a healthy, drug free lifestyle, repair the damage done to themselves
and others through substance abuse or dependence and to formulate a personalized
relapse prevention plan.
