The Pines Residential Treatment Center The Behavioral Studies Program for Girls (BSP-G) is a program for adolescent females ages 12 to 17 who have engaged in sexually abusive behavior towards others. These residents often present with co-morbid psychiatric issues including mood, anxiety, trauma-related and substance abuse disorders. They commonly present with antisocial, bipolar, borderline, and narcissistic personality traits. The BSP Girls program is located at the Crawford Campus of The Pines Residential Treatment Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.
The philosophy of the BSP Girls Program centers on the individualization of treatment goals and treatment planning. There is an emphasis on gender-specific programming, which addresses issues that many adolescent females encounter, such as self-esteem, obtaining and maintaining healthy relationships, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and conflict resolution. A cognitive-behavioral and systemic treatment model is the basic foundation for the program. Because most residents have experienced significant trauma in their lives, interventions derived from trauma-based and relational models are utilized to establish interpersonal skills, as well as emotional and physical boundaries. A substantial component of their treatment focuses on assisting the residents in understanding how they relate to each other, members of the opposite sex, family members, and themselves. Clinical staff teaches residents how to recognize the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This model assists the residents in identifying their triggers and teaches them to utilize appropriate coping strategies to manage their distressing feelings.
Upon admission, each resident will undergo a comprehensive psychosexual assessment. The resident’s treatment needs will be identified based on the results of the assessment, a clinical interview conducted by the clinician, and a comprehensive chart review. Each resident will be assigned to two clinical treatment groups per quarter based on her identified needs. Clinical groups are facilitated by a licensed or masters-prepared clinician. Each treatment group has specific goals for the residents to acquire/achieve. Pre and post tests will be given at the beginning and end of each group to assess whether the resident has achieved the specific goals of the group.
Additional treatment components include individual and family therapy, substance abuse services and recreation therapy.
