The Pines Residential Treatment Center For the youngest children, this program provides a therapeutic and safe setting to address comprehensive mental health needs. The program provides psychiatrically and medically managed residential treatment for emotionally disturbed youth. Located on the Kempsville Campus in Norfolk, VA the Child Program serves male and female residents ages 5-12. The Child Program is designed to meet the developmental needs of the young child and those of latency age who require a high degree of nurturance, adult supervision, and role modeling with opportunities to learn through play. Residents take part in individual, group, and family therapy at frequencies specified by their Individualized Treatment Plans. The children reside in a secure and structured environment where therapeutic resources are available to meet their developmental needs. Therapists focus on decreasing aggression and improving impulse control and frustration tolerance within the resident's familial and peer relationships. Behavior management for child residents is monitored via a point and level system through which increasing responsibility is demonstrated and extra privileges are earned. Appropriate educational services are also provided. We use a Short-Term Stabilization approach, which is an important program component. Critical to the success of this intensive services plan is the aftercare support services and providers who actively participate in the resident's treatment planning, treatment, and discharge planning. We accept children with sexually reactive behavior ages 5-12 who require a multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment to help their sexual trauma and the disruptions in their development. General goals of therapy include decreasing children's interest in sexual matters and the developing of alternative methods of gratification and social acceptance, increasing self-esteem, improving communication, decreasing aggressive impulses and increasing problem solving skills.
