Adolescent Treatment and Recovery Center

The Adolescent Treatment and Recovery Center (ATRC) is designed to provide intensive psychiatric and substance abuse services for dually diagnosed adolescent young males in a therapeutic community. The males in this program are aged 16 to 19 and have significantly impaired daily functioning due to their psychiatric illness and substance abuse. The ATRC program is located at The Pines Crawford Campus in Portsmouth, Virginia .

The Adolescent Treatment and Recovery Center offers a comprehensive approach utilizing cognitive behavior therapy and an adolescent developmental recovery model. The program’s clinical treatment components are designed to address the psychiatric, developmental and substance abuse problems of these young men. In addressing the behavioral, emotional, psychological, substance abuse and educational difficulties that are impeding them and interfering with their developmental progress, they will be able to recognize their potential.

The Center focuses heavily on relapse prevention techniques. The co- occurring series of substance abuse groups are divided into phases during the residential stay: Enhancement of motivation and integration of recovery principles are a central focus of the groups. The SASSI is administered to all program residents to assess their use and assist in individualized treatment planning. Residents also receive individual, family and group therapies. In addition to family therapy meetings, staff will also facilitate a bi-monthly face-to-face family group and family psychoeducation group on site.

There is also strong focus on education, life and vocational skills designed to provide residents with a strong foundation and the tools and practical supports to achieve their goals and to become contributing members of their communities.

Designed for Male Youth Ages 16-19 with:

• DSM-IV-R diagnosis of psychiatric illness
• Secondary, significant substance abuse issues
• IQ of 70 or above, or functionally below 70 as a result of emotional issues, learning disability and/or educational deprivation
• Inappropriate or unavailable family and community resources to support adequate functioning in a less intensive level of treatment
• Motivation for treatment as demonstrated by a willingness to commit to a verbal contractual agreement
• A willingness to participate in an academic/vocational program
